Quilting with Liberty Fabrics // The Photo Shoot

As it is with book publishing, our part of the work happens relatively quickly and then it’s all about waaaaaaiting. And waiting and waiting and waiting.

Over a year ago, Nissa and I hopped on a plane with the famous always-up-for-an-adventure Susanne Woods and we had the best time in rural England and central London styling and photographing quilts for Lucky Spool’s Quilting with Liberty Fabrics. It was a DREAM SHOOT.

Now that the book has been introduced to the world by its lovely author, Jenni Smith, we are able to share our stories. Just like the beautiful quilts in this book have wonderful backstories, so do the photographs! We will most likely take our time with these stories, writing a series of posts that we will share at a leisurely pace so we are able to relish in the memories of that wonderful trip, those beautiful quilts and our unforgettable friend, Susanne.

As with all photoshoots, there are logistics that need to be worked out regarding the locations, the props, the timing (that all important Sun dictates much of how well a shoot goes…or doesn’t). In this case, the logistics involved actually getting the quilts in our hands! This very important step involved the author, Jenni, and her partner in crime, Kay Walsh, to pack up the very large, very valuable quilts and deliver them to us via train from northern England.

So Susanne and I met Jenni and Kay at Liberty in central London and they handed off the quilts to us…

And then Susanne and I (somehow!) wheeled 3 suitcases, a tote, a super cute Liberty sewing basket and a giant framed quilt block through Central London and then loaded ourselves onto a train to Windsor where our epic shoot would begin. It was like traveling with small children—always making sure we knew where each of the bags were at all times was a huge responsibility! Can you imagine?? Those cases are FILLED with quilts made from ALL Liberty fabrics!!

I’m really looking forward to sharing the stories about the quilts with you. It has been such fun for me to reflect back on this trip and I hope you find mine and Nissa’s stories entertaining and enlightening around how much love and effort really goes into our photo shoots.

Until the next post…
+ Kristy
